Friday evening destinations
Last saved by Jeremy Morley on September 17, 2012
3 hour cruise along the river Trent with disco, drinks and a BBQ meal.
Discover the ghostly secrets of the ancient city of Nottingham! In the shadows of the Castle, in a graveyard, and underground in ancient sandstone caves, we will weave a web of haunting tales.
Robin Hood is world famous but who was he? How did the legend begin? What does it mean today? These questions will be explored as you embark on a quest and visit places associated with Nottingham's folklore son.
Nottingham Contemporary Art Gallery
A guided tour of the gallery followed by a light meal in the cafe, before heading out to explore the nightlife of the city.
Need a selection (from cheap to gourmet?) to book
Nottingham Greyhound Stadium
http://www.nottinghamdogs.com/
Has a glassed-in restaurant overlooking the track which will take up to 340. Includes a smaller further enclosed area. Food ok for mass catering, waitress service, you can get up and go trackside or can stay put - there are TVs showing the races & cards at the tables & guys from the Tote come to the tables to take bets if you want. There are regular evening race meets on Fridays and Saturdays.
Nottingham Racecourse
On a quick look at the racing programme http://www.nottinghamracecourse.co.uk/Racing/Raceday-Times.htm they only run in the day (no floodlit evening entertainment!). There is a rooftop restaurant but quite expensive per head (£57.50-70)
Caves Tours
- firstly there's the "City of Caves" attraction which is in the Broadmarsh shopping centre (slightly freakily you go in on the upper level of the shopping centre!). It's an interesting tour, including a medieval tannery & WW2 shelters, etc. http://www.cityofcaves.com/ (NB: website includes music!)
- there's also a tour of the caves beneath the castle: http://www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=1730
- possibly we can chat someone up from the Nottingham Caves Survey to talk / guide too: http://nottinghamcavessurvey.org.uk/
Green's Windmill
Not really an evening out. But possibly an interesting destination. As well as being a working windmill, standing on one of the ridges near the city centre, it also happens to have been owned by George Green who came up with the famous (in mathematics) Green's Theorem (he didn't call it that, I suspect) despite only having one year of formal education. Eg: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Green http://www.experiencenottinghamshire.com/discover-notts/greens-windmill-p354661
