Hopefully this one will be fairly simple to check :-)

Everything is web based (CartoDB) so just a modern browser required. I guess we'll need logins for this one.

Matt Walker on August 29, 2013:

Could you also confirm which version just for completeness.

Cheers,

Matt.

Matt Walker on August 30, 2013:

And one more thing :-) Can you check that you can access http://cartodb.com/

Jeremy Morley on September 3, 2013:

It's only IE8 at present! Will ask about getting Chrome on as it's a uni standard alternative. Cartodb is not supported. Even Basecamp refuses to display in IE8..

Note that Chrome is on the other, standard clusters. Easier to swap?..

Jeremy Morley on September 3, 2013:

For completeness, and because the lab's round the corner, I tried B29 too.

Has Chrome (29.0.1547.62 m - up to date), runs cartodb, runs the 3D torus test, no VirtualBox.

Machine (most recently upgraded of the labs it seems): Core i5-2400 @ 3.10Gz, 8GB RAM, 64-bit Win 7 Enterprise SP1. On a quick look, all the machines seem to be the same level.

(NB: I didn't record the service packs accurately in the other rooms).

Jeremy Morley on September 4, 2013:

Re. updates to the software in B26e.

i thought we (Geography) had more direct installation access on these machines but it seems they're also set up by a centrally managed software image that our "Desktop Development Group" manage. The flexibility is that it's a variation of the standard lab image to add Geography's software (e.g. ArcGIS, Imagine Arcview 3.3...).

Anyway, this is the long and the short of it, from the sysadmin in Geography:

"I have made a request to start getting the image upgraded in the GCL, but to be honest I doubt we have enough time to develop the image and deploy it before the conference. We require at least 2-3 weeks notice to make image changes as these all have to go through our change management process and require time from the Desktop Development Group to develop the new image and test the deployment and finally deploy."

The issue is that the machines are also used for teaching, research, project work, etc. so they can't afford to randomly install stuff & have it conflict with other software. So we'll try but can't guarantee that Chrome or the VirtualBox update will be applied to the lab in time,

Jeremy

Thanks Jeremy, I think we're going to have to make the following room moves on Tue:

  • W4 Humanitarian OpenStreetMap to Sir Clive Granger Building: B26e - Grad Lab to make way for...
  • W2 Quantum GIS in action and W3 CartoDB (needs recent Chrome and access to cartodb.com) to Sir Clive Granger Building: B29 B

Jeremy Morley on September 4, 2013:

Makes sense - glad we haven't published workshop rooms yet, have we?

What's happening about the guys wanting 3D and Virtual Box? Even if they can manage with the older version of VirtualBox, I'm not sure we can get the component they wanted installed into it.

Matt Walker on September 4, 2013:

I've just emailed Oliver to see what he's currently thinking and suggest that he might consider delegates using their own laptops...

Matt Walker on September 6, 2013:

Hi Jeremy,

Actually I'm thinking about moving "W3: Using CartoDB to map real-time data" to Hallward Library: LG101 instead as their is a free slot.

Can you confirm that Chrome is available and cartodb.com can be accessed over in Hallward Library: LG101?

Thanks,

Matt.

Matt Walker on September 10, 2013:

Hi Jeremy,

I know there is a lot on at the moment but could you or Mark confirm that Chrome is available and cartodb.com can be accessed over in Hallward Library: LG101? We need to move the CartoDB workshop from B26 E and Hallward is my number one choice as there is a spare slot at the same time.

Cheers,

Matt.

This is the other one I mentioned. Essentially it's now: confirm that Chrome is available and cartodb.com can be accessed over in Hallward Library: LG101? We need to move the CartoDB workshop from B26 E and Hallward is my number one choice as there is a spare slot at the same time.

Mark Iliffe on September 11, 2013:

Apparently, Chrome is available on every PC except B26E. Chrome will work from a portable USB stick regardless (portableapps.com/apps/internet/google_chrome_portable).

Jeremy Morley on September 11, 2013:

Could we start a new thread / to-do called "Final workshop set-up issues" or something? There are too many threads here to track now, with different recipient lists.

Matt Walker on September 11, 2013:

I've just checked off those that I think are done. I think all remaining items are live.
