Subject: precision problem in i.points/image library
grass binary for platform: Compiled from Sources
GRASS and NOAA AVHRR data
It seems that we have a precision problem in i.points resp.
the underlying transformation library. NOAA/AVHRR data, imported
with latest GDAL/r.in.gdal contain thousand of ground control
points (GCPs), ordered row-wise.
The snapshot of i.points shows that there is a regular dis-location
of points in the target location while correct in source location.
This introduces an error which is not desired.

shows in the left part the raw AVHRR in XY location, in the right
part the GCPs in Lat/Long. The lower right window shows that
the GCPs are no longer in a curve, but show a regular offset.
Help is desired to solve this problem.

Markus,
Errors you detected are just consequence of poor integer approximation of
the geographic position. In the NOAA <15 longitude and latitude stored as
integer values in 128th of degree. Look at included plot (horizontal axis
represents longitude and vertical is latitude, at bottom left and top right
corners are zoomed parts of top left graphics). It is clear that we just
loose precision with integer numbers scaling. It should not happen with
NOAA-15/16, because values stored as 10000th of integer (and I was check
this only just, I was have a good smooth curves with NOAA-15 GCPs). So as
I'm previously say GCPs in NOAA<15 are not good for precise rectification.
Also I'm attached new l1bdataset.cpp with several bugs fixed (added check
for overrun in values of GCP, it may be a reason of bad rectifying you
showed me in http://mpa.itc.it/markus/noaa/noaa_rectified.jpg).
