Subject: Nviz crash - loading vector point in masked area

Platform: GNU/Linux/i386
grass obtained from: Trento Italy site
grass binary for platform: Compiled from Sources
GRASS Version: 6.0.0

If you try to display in NVIZ a vector point with a position that falls in a
masked area of the loaded raster the program will crash.

Michele,

I tried hard but cannot reproduce your error in Grass 6.1 (CVS 13.08.05) on
Linux. Can you?

However, I noticed something related:

1. zoom into an area
2. create a raster encopasing the region e.g. 'r.mapcalc map=1'
3. change the region so that your 'map' falls completely outside of it
4. create a MASK, eg. 'r.mapcalc MASK=1'
5. g.region rast=map; nviz elev=map
6. segfault:

Loading Data
Update elev null mask
Error finding range
building color table
Error finding range
recalculating normals...
% Segmentation fault

Maybe that is what you enountered? But no vector files involved...

Bob,

Although it is quite ulikely someone would like to run NVIZ on a raster which
is masked out, but could such situation be handled more gracefully for the user?

since I upgraded to Grass6.0.1RC2 I can't reproduce the problem anymore
indeed; also I have to say that I tried to reproduce the error in a
"dummy dataset" and not using the one I had the problem with: no crash
and the loaded vector point was correctly displayed.
I suspect that maybe the problem was with my data, if no changes were
done to NVIZ between the Grass6.0.0 and the Grass6.0.1RC2 relases.

I think we should consider this ""bug"" report closed since I can not
reproduce the described issue.

Didn't tried this, and it's substantially different, i had no problems
with those data running NVIZ using only the rasters, anyway my region
was fitting with the data position.

Michele.
