Subject: pacthing multiple vectors with areas doesn't result in a vector with
areas

Platform: Mac OSX
grass binary for platform: Downloaded precompiled Binaries
GRASS Version: 6.0.0

I got several vectors containing polygons with areas features.

I apply v.patch in order to obtain a single vector file but when I ask GRASS
to draw areas I see there are several "hole" in the result vector.

I tried to apply v.clean to the single vectors, but even if I have all my single
vectors files with their areas the resulting map still contains some "holes".
Sometimes boundaries disappear after applying v.patch too.

1st - don't hurry to report a problem as bug, OK? How do you know it is a bug?
First check the grass-user archive, then if the solution is not there ask on
grass user list.

For this single problem let's leave as it is. But in future - please take care.
Back to the point - can you try Grass 6.1 and see if you are able to reproduce
the problem? If you can't try 6.1/the problem persists in 6.1, send me a
location whith a mapset containing the data in question and the PERMANENT
mapset with only the projection info, na data in it. I'll see what is going
on, if I can.

I was trying to help you improve GRASS, as it's wrote on the site where
I downloaded 6.1cvs, however, I will take care in the future.

The point is that I tried with 6.0.0 and 6.1 cvs on MacOSX and with
6.0.2 on debian and got the same problem.
Now I am going to ask on the list, first I send you a location.

Thank you
raffaele

I haven't received anything yet from you. Maybe because I forgot to give you
my email: tutey at o2.pl

Raffaele,

Did you solve this problem? What is the status?

Hi Maciek.

Sorry, but I leaved to have holidays and didn't send you feedbacks.

I didn't solve the problem and don't know if I can.

I summarize briefly the whole process:

1. got several shapes from overall Italy, 103 provinces, with dimensions
ranges from 10Mb to 25Mb.
2. used v.in.ogr to import and v.clean (with rmarea,bpol,rmdupl,rmsa)
3. because of shapes contained sub-polygons for the same villages, I
needed to merge these polygons (which share the same category) and
dissolve common boundaries in order to obtain only the entire town area
and so I did it with v.extract
4. I obtained several shapes representing each town area and then
patched them altogether
5. after patching I didn't obtained what a vector map with all polygons
having area feature.

I made hundreds of trial using different values for parameters in
v.clean in step 2 and every time obtained similar errors, sometimes with
few polygons but every time something went wrong.

I guess that topology breaks (is the right way to call that?) when
polygons overlaps.
I used v.overlay to investigate and obtained something to work with, but
with thousand of intersection I do not need!!

Am I right? May the problem be in the original shapes?

Next week I will be at work again and be able to post you a location
(sorry but here at home I am a 56k little "geek").

    Thanx
    Raffaele
