Subject: d.m: cannot zoom and pan over an 'RGB or HIS layer'
Platform: GNU/Linux/x86
grass obtained from: CVS
grass binary for platform: Compiled from Sources
GRASS Version: 2006-05-01
1. d.m
2. 'Add RGB or HIS layer', set it up, display
4. zoom - d.zoom GUI pops up
This bug also apply to any d.rgb, d.rast.num or d.rast.arrow etc. layer added
with 'Add command layer' d.m button.
If trying to pan instead of zooming, some terminal pops up and dissapears in
a flash.

Yup. D.zoom requires a map created by d.vect or d.rast to be displayed in an
x11 display monitor. It will not operate unless it has such a map displayed.
So, if the only map is one created by d.rgb or d.his, it will ask you to
identify a raster or vector map to zoom to.
This is not a requirement in gis.m

Any chances this requirement could be overcome? Could a displayed
RGB/HIS composition, d.rast.num or d.rast.arrow output alone be enough
for d.zoom to work?

I don't know if that is possible or not. D.zoom is a special C-module that
interacts with an x11 display to change region extents. In gis.m, we simply
reset the region using g.region. This will change the zoom even if *nothing*
is displayed.

The main issue is that d.zoom redraws the display by executing
specific commands for specific types of map.
This limits it to the types of map for which the display library
maintains a list, i.e. raster, vector, or sites (yes, lib/display
still maintains a list of sites maps, and d.zoom includes the code to
redraw them by running d.sites).
If you removed the code relating to specific map types (including the
rast= and vector= options) and just called d.redraw (or manually
executed the commands from D_get_list()), it wouldn't have this
limitation, and would be a lot simpler.

This is a function of d.zoom, not d.m.
It is 'fixed' in gis.m because zooming does not depend on d.zoom. |
