Subject: v.digit: implement an elastic band function
Platform: GNU/Linux/i386
grass obtained from: Trento Italy site
grass binary for platform: Compiled from Sources
GRASS Version: GRASS 5.7 CVS 20040625
Hi,
For the new v.digit in GRASS 5.7 I would like to see an elastic band function
as it is implemented in the old v.digit in GRASS 5.0/5.3.
Digitizing long lines e.g. contour lines you always need to stop digitizing,
then set a node, then use the pan function and start digitizing from the node
again. For this an elastic band as in the old v.digit would be very helpful.
thanks

Subject: v.digit: when zooming it exits digitizing session
Platform: GNU/Linux/i386
grass obtained from: Trento Italy site
grass binary for platform: Downloaded precompiled Binaries
GRASS Version: GRASS 6.0.0 (2005)
When I'm digitizing and I want to zoom or pan on the image, v.digit exits from
the digitizing session and it doesn't return to it at the end of the zooming/panning
session. |

This is as designed.
Is the single click required to get back to digitizing after changing
the region really a burden?

Perhaps I didn't explain myself.
Suppose I want to draw a line between two remote points not identifiable
in a single zoom window. I mark the first point and then I must unzoom,
find the second point and zoom on it. When I've finished the zooming
session I don't know how to pick the second point because the program
exited the previous digitizing session and if I click on "digitize new
line" it starts a new line and doesn't continue the previous one.
With grass54 I could stop digitizing, zoom or pan, quit the zooming
session and restart marking from where I stopped.
Perhaps the problem is that I don't know the correct procedure, but I
didn't find manuals or tutorials.
Thank you
Stefano

Stefano is right. This is badly annoying. It is not about a "single click"
like Hamish supposed. Actually it takes following steps:
1. draw the line
2. right click to stop prior to zooming
3. fill in the database form
4. click "Pan"
5. do panning
6. click "Digitize new line"
7. goto 1 until done
Steps 2,3,6 are redundant. This means that digitizing takes about *twice* that
much time as it should. Not mentioning that a standard in commercial
digitizing software is that Pan, Zoom etc. are mapped in keyboard to speed up
the digitizing further. It would be extremly usefull to have it in v.digit if
it is to be competitive.
So far due to this issue and bugs:
http://intevation.de/rt/webrt?serial_num=3047&display=History
http://intevation.de/rt/webrt?serial_num=2962&display=History
v.digit is virtually useless for serious usage.
Qgis's v.digit plugin is better - the bugs do not apply. But anyway the
unability to digitize continously and fast is a serious disadvantage. Radim
doesn't know how to fix it yet:
http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=11402834
This a serious issue - neither Grass nor Qsis provide a convenient digitizing
tool - one of the basic GIS and desktop maping elements. It would be great if
somebody skillful could take a look at it.

It works in current CVS, i.e. comming QGIS 0.7, I dont remember when it
was fixed.

Does the new tool in v.digit: "Edit line/boundary" in 6.1 do the trick?
Or what is the 'elastic band' exactly, if I got you wrong?
