It sounds like your GDAL isn't installed properly. Is it in a directory
included in LD_LIBRARY_PATH or /etc/ld.so.conf?

when i tried to run grass57 first time i got the following message:

GRASS 5.7.-cvs:~/diss/grassdata > Error in startup script: ps.map: error while
loading shared libraries: libgdal.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No
such file or directory while executing

"main $argc $argv"
    (file "/usr/local/grass57-10_05_2004/etc/dm/d.m.tcl" line 786)

after getting the /usr/lib/libgdal.so.1 the display manager run! does this
exclude the gdal problem?

Did you try running the 'create location from EPSG code' again after
installing GDAL? It sounds like the missing GDAL probably was your problem,
and if so, the EPSG code location creation should work now.
