Subject: icon archive

Platform: Mac OSX
grass obtained from: compiled from source via fink
grass binary for platform: Mac OSX
GRASS Version: 5.0.2

Given the limited installed point markers (+,x,diamond, box) and the potential
for limitless icon
creation, it might be nice to have an archive of user created icons that all
GRASS users could
access. For example, learning how to use the icon generator, I made a 'bug' for
the bugsites on
the sample data. If I still have it, I'd be happy to submit it. I bet a lot of
GRASS users have made
custom point icons, many of which would be very useful to others.

Is this no long relevant in GRASS 5.1?

I think that library of icons is very good idea and necessity.
The format for icons is changed and extended in 5.1, see
http://freegis.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/grass51/lib/symbol/

example icon muchomurka:
xdriver: http://mpa.itc.it/radim/g51/symbol.png
ps.map: http://mpa.itc.it/radim/g51/psmap.png

Icons are stored in grass51/etc/symbol/<group>/<icon> (system icons)
or in <mapset>/symbol/<group>/<icon> (user icons)
and selected by <group>/<icon> in modules, e.g. d.vect icon=demo/muchomurka

Unfortunately, there is no visual tool to make icons, I think that
some script converting (limited) xfig format or similar
is the solution. Or vim/emacs of course for simple shapes.
demo/muchomurka was made in vim.

If you make some icons for 5.1, send it to me and I'll put it to cvs.

Radim,

Thanks for the reply. For the simple icons, are they kind of like the
version 5.0.x icons that you make with "x's" in a text editor? How did
you make the mushroom icons in VIM?

I looked at the format specified in the link below. If I understand it
correctly, it seems like you should be able to make icons within GRASS.
You could have a v.out routine similar to creating an ascii vector
file. Just the header would be different. It is simply a header,
followed by the xy coordinates of the icon vertices, followed by a
couple of end statements. Is this correct? Anyway, the idea was to have
an archive on the GRASS site where users could contribute their icons
(like the muchomurka icon you made) and others could download them.

Anyway, thanks for replying. I am eagerly awaiting GRASS 5.1--for use
in my archaeological research and in my spatial technologies course
next Spring (2004).
