Subject: broken rpm for fc5?
grass obtained from: Trento Italy site
grass binary for platform: Downloaded precompiled Binaries
GRASS Version: 6.2.0
Is the Grass rpm for fc5 broken perhaps, or is it just me? There appears to be
a whole bunch of unresolved dependencies (all of them core grass libraries).
While the Grass rpm for fc4 complains of two unresolved Xorg type dependencies
on my machine (bug report #5253), it appears to install and run fine on fc5 (kernel
2.6.17-1.2187_FC5, with all other Fedora updates available up to about two weeks
ago applied) using --nodeps. This is not the case with the Grass rpm for fc5.
Whether I try to install over the fc4 version, or remove the fc4 version first,
the fc5 version will not install without --nodeps, and once installed it won't
load - gis.m flashes on the screen very briefly and then grass dies.
Note that grass 6.2.0rc1 compiled just fine on my machine with fc2 running at
the time, and continued to run fine after upgrading to fc5.
Regards,
Rick |

IIRC, some X dependency names have changed with the move to xorg. The
fc6 RPMs should work fine on fc5 systems. I vaguely remember making a
related change in the spec file when building the fc6 RPMs.
If you could post the error message, it would be very helpful to
determine the nature of the problem. Most of us aren't mind readers,
but we are working on it. :-)

Following this text is the error message received when trying to install rp=
m =20
of grass-fc5 over top of rpm of grass-fc4 just now. This was done as non-ro=
ot =20
this time as I didn't want the installation to go forward, just in case, bu=
t =20
the error message appears to be the same as when I tried to install as root=
=20
on top of grass-fc4 and with grass-fc4 removed the other day.
FYI, all prerequisites (rpm of gdal, proj, etc.) for fc4 from Trento Italy =
=20
site were applied to ensure most recent versions were present (generally =20
previous were only one update version older - I've been keeping these up to=
=20
date as best as possible) before installing rpm of grass-fc4.
If memory serves me right, doing rpm on swig-fc5 and geos-fc5 went fine, bu=
t =20
doing rpm on proj-fc5 also presented some dependency problems. I tried to =20
reproduce error message as non-root, but couldn't and got this message:
-- snip --
[rick@rick3 rpm-supporting-libraries]$ rpm -Uvh proj-4.5.0-2.fc5.i386.rpm
error: can't create transaction lock on /var/lib/rpm/__db.000
-- snip --
I know just enough about linux, etc to get myself into trouble and, with lo=
ts =20
of effort (and learning in the process), how to get back out. But I feel =20
lucky that I was able to get grass running again as quickly as I did by =20
simply removing rpms of grass-fc5, geos-fc5, proj-fc5, and reinstalling fc4=
=20
versions of same. I would prefer to not experiment further in fear of =20
breaking what works, as I'm trying to beat the clock on projects that need =
=20
grass in time for a project out of town this weekend and all next week. =20
However, hope the little bit that I can provide here helps, and I am willin=
g =20
to help in other ways if required when I return from my trip.
Regards,
Rick
PS. I'm curious ... any idea why rpm of grass-fc4 installs at non-customary=
=20
location /usr/grass-6.2.0/ instead of usr/local/grass-6.2.0? This shouldn't=
=20
be the cause of problems, should it?
