A few comments (none of them the definitive answer):
1) gdalbridge is not really part of GRASS, but of GDAL; only a copy of it is
included in GRASS

2) If you compile with the --with-gdal option to the configure script,
gdalbridge should not be used---did you get an error or were you just looking
though the source code?

3) gdalbridge will probably be removed in the future as it seems to be a bit
unreliable and already in GRASS 5.7.x --with-gdal is a default option

ah.

I thought that should be the case - I used --with-gdal, and everything
compiled fine. But when I ran r.in.gdal, it gave me an error that
gdalbridge couldn't find the gdal library. I first noticed the problem
with 5.0.1 (sorry, I was lazy), now I patch gdalbridge out of habit, so
I haven't tried leaving it alone in recents versions.

I just tried on Mac OSX. Works perfectly with
--with-gdal

Will close the report.

Either it was quietly fixed (I delayed reporting this for a while), or
it was a fluke. I didn't want to rebuild all of GRASS to test it, then
I remembered I could build an individual module. So I 'unfixed'
gdalbridge.c, built and installed it and it's working (that is, NOT
using gdalbridge).

Theory of the Universe

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly
what the universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly
disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarrely
inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has
already happened.
