Subject: error running grass5

Platform: GNU/Linux/i386
grass obtained from: Other (CDROM etc)
grass binary for platform: Downloaded precompiled Binaries

Hello,
I keep getting the following error when I try to run grass5. The error I
get is as follows:

Starting GRASS
ERROR: LOCATION_NAME not set
'xterm': unknown terminal type
Error opening terminal: xterm

I have the binaries in /opt/grass. I have tried to set LOCATION_NAME=/opt/grass
and LOCATION_HOME=/opt/grass and I am still having problems. If I need to set
those variables to something like /opt/grass/bin please let me know. Also, please
let me know if I need to download a different binary, I had a hard time downloading
from grass.itc.it so I downloaded from a usa mirror if I remember correctly.
I have slackware linux version 9.0.

Thank You,

If you still get this error after fixing the other problem, delete the
file ~/.grassrc5 before trying again.

Which version of GRASS are you using? The 5.0.0 and 5.0.1 binaries
may have inadvertently used termcap, so you might need an entry for
xterm in /etc/termcap. 5.0.2 should use terminfo, in which case you
should have a terminfo entry for xterm (i.e. a file called
/usr/lib/terminfo/x/xterm or /usr/share/terminfo/x/xterm).

To be safe, ensure that you have complete termcap and terminfo
databases installed. I recall that Slackware used to provide a choice
between minimal or full termcap/terminfo databases; if this is still
the case, ensure that you have the full version.

Hello,
That is what the problem was. There is a termcap file in /etc but there
is no terminfo files. I had to use captoinfo and tic to convert my termcap
information into terminfo files. It also installed it in my home directory
/root instead of /usr/share/terminfo so I had to manually copy the files to
that directory. Thank You.

Thank You,
