On the v.to.points documentation, mention that (if dmax (say what
units)) is not exceeded, points will be created for
the beginning
and
the end
of each line.

Also perhaps add new options to allow the user to put points at
just the beginning
just the end
just the middle
any combo of the above.

mention that cat numbers are added too.
allow making cat numbers from line cat numbers.

Regarding Dan's observations:

1) Current (2006-08-03) documentation mentions that dmax is in map units.

2) For the v.to.points html page, under 'Description', add "If the damx value
is greater than the length of the input line length, v.to.points will by
default write points at the input line's start and end vertices." (or similar)
3) The criticism that v.to.points should write output points to beginning
only, end only, middle or any combination thereof; this is more appropriately
a wish, not a bug. And this funtionality could be achieved with v.segment.

4) v.to.points writes attributes to two layers: Layer 1 appears to have
adopted the cat numbers from the line the points were created from; and Layer
two has unique cat numbers for each created point, the cat number from the
line it was created, and the along distance. So Dan's last requested is
satisified, and to satisfy his second last, simply append to the 'Description'
section of the html page: "Unique point categories are written to Layer 2."
(or similar).

After playing arouns with v.to.points for a bit, I found out that you can
always create points at the beginning and end of a line by setting dmax >
length of the line segment. To get points created for the beginning, middle,
and end only, set dmax so that

(length of line / 2) <= dmax <= length of line

So if dmax is always between 0.5x and 1.0x the line length, you will always
get points created at exactly the beginning, middle and end of the input line
segment.

So this addresses some of Dan's requests as well.

Eric,

I have fixed (hopefully) the v.to.points manuall following your suggestions.
Please give it a look if all OK.

I'm closing this bug. If you find something's still missing regarding this
particular report please drop me a line. I will be looking into another
v.to.points Dan's request, #2802, as time allows.

Maciek
