Subject: Hungarian National projection system and grid (EOV)

Platform: GNU/Linux/i386
grass obtained from: CVS
grass binary for platform: Compiled from Sources

Dear GRASS Team,

Is there a chance that the Hungarian national projection system and grid (abbreviated
usually as EOV) could be included into the GRASS g.proj module? We are archaeologists
who would like to use GRASS in our projects but the lack of this system poses
difficulties in our work (an example: our GPS works in WGS84 but it is a requirement
by the heritage protection agency here to provide maps and data on sites in EOV).
If the answer is a 'YES', we are ready to collect and send all the data necessary
for the writing of the module.

Thanx in advance.

Certainly. The crs.ifrag.de website
http://crs.ifag.de/country_select.php?country=HU shows no data available
for Hungary. If you have a source with similar data to that given for the
other countries on this website it would be very helpful.

Dear Paul,

Thank you for your initial positive attitude towards our
request. We checked the homepage, but the things there are
like Chinese to us:). I have a book in Hungarian that
contains some description of the Hungarian projection sytem
(EOV). It consists of some basic data I think understand
(like the radius of the reference ellipsoid and things like
that) and a nice set of long equations that I cannot follow.
Do you think those could help? Maybe I could send you the
scanned equatrions and try to translate the text between
the equations, though I am not very familiar with
mathematics in English (as well as in Hungarian:).

If this doesn't work, we can try to find a person who knows
more about geodetics and geography to help us.

Best wishes,

Gabor

The most important thing is to be able to represent the projection in the
PROJ.4 system. This is an external library used by GRASS for its projection
support. Look at http://remotesensing.org/proj/ for some hints. If you don't
get the information you need there you could try asking on the PROJ.4 mailing
list. Somewhere there may know what projection is used in Hungary and how to
formulate it in PROJ.4 format or may able to work it out from the equations
and information you can give.

Here is another document:

with specifications.

The EOV (Hungarian National Grid) is well defined in the "EPSG GEODETIC
PARAMETER DATASET" (www.epsg.org; downloadable
at "http://135.196.105.134/databases/Discv67.html")

EPSG: 23700 (HD72/EOV)

A recent revision of the above mentioned "official" definition
at "http://lazarus.elte.hu/gb/geodez/geod2.htm" (or more precisely it's base
definition of HD72 at "http://lazarus.elte.hu/gb/geodez/geod3.htm") can be
foud here: "http://sas2.elte.hu/tg/hd72.htm"
(The later also conatins a contact of the author.)

(By the way I also support this request ...)

Hi,

I checked and found the EPSG 23700 at:
  http://ocean.csl.co.uk/experimental/index.php

# entry:
http://ocean.csl.co.uk/experimental/service/search.php?term=23700&submit=&searchType=crs&format=html
&view=record&server=1
# details:
http://ocean.csl.co.uk/experimental/service/search.php?term=23700&submit=&searchType=crs&format=html
&view=collected&server=1
It's also in PROJ4 (/usr/local/share/proj/epsg):
# HD72 / EOV
<23700> +proj=omerc +lat_0=47.14439372222222 +lonc=19.04857177777778 +alpha=90
+k=0.99993 +x_0=650000 +y_0=200000 +ellps=GRS67 +units=m +no_defs <>

Should it work out of the box then in GRASS [6]?

Hallo,

Diese Parameters sind gut, aber nur mit SWISS OBLIQUE MERCATOR
projektion. Also, man soll das epsg-file so editieren:

# HD72 / EOV
<23700> +proj=somerc +lat_0=47.14439372222222 +lon_0=19.04857177777778
+alpha=90
+k=0.99993 +x_0=650000 +y_0=200000 +ellps=GRS67 +units=m +no_defs
+towgs84=+57.01,-69.97,-9.29 <>

Hi

(thanks for writing in German - compliments! - but let's continue
in English to keep the other developers in sync)

This bug is (now) related to PROJ4, please post the last
report in English here:

 http://bugzilla.remotesensing.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=PROJ.4

Markus

Hi,

in the PROJ4 list was an interesting posting. Since GRASS depends
on PROJ4, everything available there should work in GRASS, too:

http://lists.maptools.org/pipermail/proj/2006-December/002691.html

Maybe some more mail will appear the next days.

Hi,

Thank you for the information. I forwarded the mailing-list post to
Gabor Molnar, who can give an exact answer to this question.
