In some situations that I don't want to reproduce, a.in.ascii can say:
ERROR: xcol > minimum last column number
which looks dumb, as things being greater than minimum is usually good.
Ah, one can see it with
$ </dev/null v.in.ascii out=mypoints 
(but there are other messages.)

that error message has been updated in 6.1 to something more useful.
The text you refer to is not changed but the reason for (usually)
triggering the error is explained.

With the help of the extra info I think it is easier to understand what this
message means.
