Mon, May 19 2003 14:10:21    Request created by guest
Subject: doc: please remove outdated import desc from FAQ page

Platform: GNU/Linux/i386
grass obtained from: Mirror of Trento site
grass binary for platform: Compiled from Sources
GRASS Version: 5.0.2

Please consider ditching the info at http://grass.itc.it/faq/importing_usgs_7_5min.html.
I'm pretty sure those instructions are no longer true and that novices are better
served with GRASS tutorial by Moritz Lennert, section How to Quickstart GRASS:
http://grass.itc.it/gdp/grass5tutor/HTML/book1.html

Thanks,

Mike

This is a good idea. However, changing is possible for every developer
with CVS write access:

http://grass.itc.it/grasscvs.html#web
"Web site CVS management (developers only)
Developers have access to maintain the GRASS web pages:

Set the CVSROOT variable (with your CVS ID)
    cvs -z3 co web

The web site is updated by a cronjob four times a day.
"

Please someone may update the FAQ - thanks [1],

 Markus

I'd be happy to do that, but would like to confirm details... should these instructions
be removed
entirely ? Is the reason that r.in.gdal is the way to go instead ?

Hi there,

I really hope a reply is okay--as opposed to using the
bug tracking interface.

SDTS files are pretty much the only data I've worked
with--though I'm no expert.

For the SDTS DEM's folks definately want to use
r.in.gdal, as suggested. The FIPS lib is a rathole.

For getting DEMs, I don't think folks can get those
from the USGS anymore. I've been getting mine from
gisdatadepot.com--the USGS site directed me there.

I imagine that folks who want SDTS DEMs also want SDTS
DLGs. For the DLGs, v.in.sdts worked well.

I understand the need for an authoritative
confirmation. It's a bit like having the fox guard the
henhouse, but the author of GDAL, Frank Warmerdam,
might indicate that the instructions are out of date.
The GDAL website might also provide you with enough
information alone: http://www.remotesensing.org/gdal/

Let me know if there's anything I can do. Simply
putting the pointer on the webpage to the tutorial
will help many new folks.

Many thanks,

Mike

OK, that makes it clearer, thanks. There's an initial "rough" pointer
to web readers now, I'll clear it up further soon.
