Subject: grass-fc4.rpm dependency breaks fontserver (xfs)

Platform: GNU/Linux/x86
grass obtained from: Trento Italy site
grass binary for platform: Downloaded precompiled Binaries
GRASS Version: grass-6.2.0-1.fdr.fc4.i386.rpm

Problem is not with GRASS, but with installation of GRASS from rpm, which caused
xfs to fail and, therefore, X server to not start. Can be very frightening for
non-computer people (i.e. me!). Details follow:

OS = FC5 (2.6.17-1.2187_FC5-i686 kernel) with latest updates (yum, as at 01 November
2006, excluding latest kernel and openoffice). Tcl=8.4.13. Nvidia driver from
livna. Running Grass6.2.0RC1 compiled from source on FC2 a short time before
upgrade to FC5. All running fine until 02 Nov 2006.

Installed grass-6.2.0-1.fdr.fc4.i386.rpm on 01 November 2006 (immediately following
yum update noted above), plus all other rpm's present at http://grass.itc.it/grass62/binary/linux/
to ensure up-to-date installation.

Following packages (most recent available) were also installed same date to satisfy
dependencies claimed when installing grass-6.2.0-1.fdr.fc4.i386.rpm:
   1) xorg-x11-libs-6.8.2-37.FC4.49.2.1.i386.rpm
   2) xorg-x11-Mesa-ligGL-6.8.2-37.FC4.49.2.1.i386.rpm

All appeared fine, but following first shut-down (for the night) and reboot on
morning of 02 Nov 2006, X-server (per xorg.conf) could not init font path "unix/:7100
(font-server network link broken?), resulting in X server not being able to open
default font 'fixed' (but font and index .dir and .alias files present, fontpaths
all fine and identified), resulting in X-server not starting. Traced problem
to one of the files (/usr/X11R6/lib/libFS.so.6?) in xorg-x11-libs-6.8.2-37.FC4.49.2.1.i386.rpm
package. Removing package (using --nodeps, as rpm installer complained that grass,
mplayer, terraform and opendx all needed package) solved the problem. Curious
thing, however, is that grass, mplayer and opendx all seem to function fine so
far (and newer rpm of opendx installed fine) without this package!

Suggestion: review rpm spec for Grass as relates to dependency for shared libraries
in xorg-x11-libs-6.8.2-37.FC4.49.2.1.i386.rpm and/or other X-related packages.
Other than this incident, I am very pleased with the fine job developing this
recent version of Grass ... hats off to a job well done folks!

Regards,
Rick

Hi,

thanks for reporting. The specs are here:
http://grass.itc.it/grass62/binary/linux/spec/

Off hand I don't know how to modify grass.spec.
Some FC5/FC6 RPMs are hopefully on the way.

For the GRASS 6.2.1 RPM I have now changed to

%if %{VER1} >= 5
Requires:       mesa-libGL >= 6.5
BuildRequires:  mesa-libGL >= 6.5
Requires:       libX11 >= 1.0
BuildRequires:  libX11-devel >= 1.0
%else
Requires:       xorg-x11-Mesa-libGL >= 6.8
BuildRequires:  xorg-x11-Mesa-libGL >= 6.8
Requires:       xorg-x11-libs >= 6.8
BuildRequires:  xorg-x11-devel >= 6.8
%endif

VER1 corresponds to the Fedora version. Please give it
a try.
