Subject: grass install sticks at atlas (in fink - debian)
Platform: other
grass obtained from: Other (CDROM etc)
grass binary for platform: Compiled from Sources
GRASS Version: 5.0.2
grass won't complete its installation using fink. It always sticks part way through
compiling the atlas package. In "fink commander" (debian front-end in mac osx)
there is no error code; it looks like its working but it's stuck. Using "dselect"
or apt-get fail (sorry, I neglected to write down the error message).
I'm new to Unix/opensource and wonder if this should be better addresed to the
caretakers of atlas. Suggestions?
I'd really like to get going using grass and would especially like to install
it with fink [[so I can keep the grass-and-related installs neatly isolated from
the "normal" osx 10.2.5 with all my high-powered, unfree, commercial wonder-apps]].
Thank you for your kind assistance and for grass.

I remember something similar happening with an earlier R package - same
symptoms, it never got to building R, because it got hung up checking for ATLAS.
I am pretty sure that the solution then was to rebuild atlas. Try
fink rebuild atlas
And then the grass install again... |

Thank you for your suggestion.
I succeeded by manually installing each of the individual packages grass and
atlas depend upon (gleaned from dselect and Fink commander while they
attempted to install grass and/or atlas). Then "sudo fink install atlas"
worked . At that point, Fink Commander installed grass with no trouble.
Notes:
I didn't keep detailed notes (-sorry-) but I recall atlas failing to install
from the fink commmand at points related to both postgresql and openodbc. It
stalled in Fink Commander (progress bar about 15% complete) at something
called, if I recall correctly, "./xconfig". [?]
I was impressed by how many dialogs required answers. Perhaps "xconfig" was
waiting for such an answer.
Thanks again for your help.
