Platform: GNU/Linux/i386
grass obtained from: Trento Italy site
grass binary for platform: Downloaded precompiled Binaries
GRASS Version: 23_10_2004

I have the version grass5.7.cvs-i686-pc-linux-gnu-04_10_2004 
and it run fine 
 
I downloaded and installed the last version  23_10_2004 and when I run 
 
d.mon start=x0   
 
I have the following error 
 
Could not execute monitor: No such file or directory 
No socket to connect to for monitor <x0>.

I suspect that XDRIVER failed to compile. Examine the output from
"make" for clues.

I, did not find any error.log related with this problem
but if I run d.mon from the GIS manager I have the following results

That indicates that "d.mon start=x0" returned a non-zero exit code.
You will need to check the terminal from which GRASS was started for
any error messages which might indicate why it failed.

In the console where I run grass57, I have the following error :

Could not execute monitor: No such file or directory
No socket to connect to for monitor <x0>.
Problem selecting x0. Will try once more

I resolved the issue, the problem was that the new installation does not 
create the folder XDRIVEDR
Then y copy the folder from the old version to the new folder installation 
and all works fine

Have the same on CVS of 28 October 2004
There is no rule to "Make" XDRIVER it seems...
So it results in an empty /driver directory (only db/ is there)
