Subject: Pressing [Create New Location] exits program

Platform: GNU/Linux/i386
grass obtained from: Trento Italy site
grass binary for platform: Downloaded precompiled Binaries
GRASS Version: 6.0.1/6.1

Hi!

my name is Victor, I use GNU/Debian 3.1.

1) I installed Grass-6.0.1 from Debian ftp. Everything went well. I started program,
clicked 'Create New Location' and the program exited.

2) Then I installed Grass-6.1 binary from:
http://grass.itc.it/grass61/binary/linux/snapshot/
However, the problem remained.

It might be smth wrong with my system, as I am new to Linux. But I checked all
the dependencies -- they are all satisfied.

Thanks,
Victor

Can you start it from a terminal prompt? (just type "grass" at the
prompt) You will then see any error messages without the window
disappearing on you.

If you are a beginner, I would stick with the official Debian packages
which by now are fairly well tested. The generic 6.1 binaries are not
made specifically for a Debian system and may be much more problematic
to get working correctly.

  Hi Hamish,

sorry for bugging you again - but I just want to inform that GRASS
6.0.1 works beautifully! I did not realize that you have to start it
from a terminal window -- Apparrently, when I wanted to create a new
location I could not see anything because there was no open terminal
window to direct output to.

  Sorry again,
  Victor
