Transaction History Ticket 3809

Mon, Nov 7 2005 18:39:41    Request created by guest
Subject: Print display manager (to file) does not print graphics (scale, grid)
Platform: GNU/Linux/i386
grass obtained from: Trento Italy site
grass binary for platform: Downloaded precompiled Binaries
GRASS Version: both 6.0.1 and 6.1.cvs

Clicking "print raster and vector maps using ps.map" with scale and/or grid on
display and printing to file or paper does not produce scale or grid in printed
product. This would be nice to have, as creating a snapshot of monitor using
"save display to image file" in either .png or .xwd format does not produce satisfactory
resolution for many report-printing jobs.

Also, "save diaplay to image file" using .png format produces vector components
that are too small (i.e. thin lines, symbols and text too small).

Otherwise, very nice work on GRASS. Many thanks.

Regards,
Rick

for d.out.png, change the resolution. A resolution of 1 gives an exact match
of what you see on the screen. A resolution of 2 gives 2x2 for each screen
pixel. This makes the rasters look nicer, but the vectors and text smaller.
Even more so for a resolution of 4 (4x4 for each pixel).

I changed the default png resolution to 1x1 when I upgraded d.out.png to
d.out.file.

Use the ps.map "mapinfo" instruction for scale and bounds information
and the "scalebar" instruction to draw a scalebar. The "grid" and
"geogrid" instructions take care of the grids. It is hoped that the
print with ps.map button produces a command file template that gets
you close; you can then copy and tweak as needed.

maybe have d.out.png find and change any d.vect calls to use width=$res
? maybe not

So I need to generate a script file first, then modify it to include =20
scale bar and grid. That shouldn't be too difficult to do, but a bit =20
inconvient when having to generate several output files (my last report =20
required 42 figures to be generated from GRASS). If not too difficult =20
to do (I don't know, I'm not a programmer), then perhaps future =20
revisions of "print from GUI" could automate this in ps.map script for =20
scale and grid (I guess this is not a bug, but a wish)?

Rick
