Student Mentoring

Posted by Steven Feldman on May 15, 2013

FOSS4GNA are running a student meet mentor lunch which I read about in Directions http://apb.directionsmag.com/entry/should-your-conference-do-this/329390

What do people think?

How would this work exactly? Mentors register for an hour (or less), students then sign up for mentors for ten minute one-one sessions? That could either be an organisational nightmare or easily done with a whiteboard and sticky notes.

Another possibility is a speed-dating ("speed-geeking") format, but I doubt every student wants five minutes with every mentor. But I dunno...

Antony Scott on May 15, 2013:

Really good idea. I would suggest keeping it informal and self-organising – though mentors might want to agree a framework/approach of some kind.

Abi Page on May 15, 2013:

We could include a call for mentors with the volunteer call? Or would you want to pin-point individuals?

Jeremy Morley on May 15, 2013:

I think we should write up a "job description" of some sort to say what the mentor does (and might get from it) and the student should expect. We can then ask mentors to volunteer beforehand (so students can see it's worth coming for) or at the event, and then have a "speed dating" session using post-its on a board for mentors to suggest their expertise and for students to sign up to meet in a range of time slots. Not too much organising for us that way.

Steven Feldman on May 15, 2013:

Why not wait until FOSS4GNA is over and then ask them how it worked out?

Perhaps Peter can also report back on this and any other lessons from the event

Jeremy Morley on May 15, 2013:

Seems reasonable

Abi Page on June 25, 2013:

Can I check if we still want to ask for mentors in the volunteer call?
