OSM mapping of EMCC

Posted by Jo Cook on September 20, 2012

Hi All,

I've chatted to a few people about this while at AGI, but this is for
everyone else...

Why don't we map EMCC using OSM-GB down to the level of things people need
to know about, like plug sockets, coffee, water, toilets etc. We can do
this using walking papers, or something more high-tech, and I'm reliably
informed that we could probably use some free (eg student) labour if we
wanted. I'm very very keen to also do some shortest path routing between
the different halls, EMCC, and rooms within EMCC.

Thoughts?

Jo

Sounds like a great idea, though I know nothing about OSM mapping down to that level. Maybe a specialist use case for OSM-GB? Could maybe get the local OSM community involved too.

The good thing about OSM is that if we want to do it, then we can. The only issue will be providing wms access down to that level- which as you say sounds like a job for OSM-GB.

Steven Feldman on September 25, 2012:

The OSM-GB WMS is zoom layered so it would be easy to set up to show the floor plans when zoomed in. TBH I think we could probably manage with importing AutoCAD files straight into our database and serving as a WMS layer if we cannot get volunteers to capture.

Mark Iliffe on September 26, 2012:

I'll volunteer for the data capture. I'm slightly plugged into local OSM community so a mapping party would be a good event for them. Also, I may have a slight agenda when it comes to my PhD research...

Jo Cook on September 27, 2012:

I'd love it if we could coordinate the mapping party with one of our F2F meetings at the venue so we could all join in (if we want). I think we're going to have to speak nicely to EMCC to find an appropriate day when they don't have an event on though, so they don't mind a bunch of people crawling around the place

So how do we move this ahead? I have a possible suggestion (depending on the EMCC's availability). I'm teaching a group of 7 MSc GIS students in a module called "Professional GIS" & we could probably set them up for a mapping party at the end of term, on Tuesday 11th December. We could clearly throw the invitation wider and/or have an F2F around then (e.g. on the 12th).

Might be able to do it earlier but end-of-term would suit I think.

Hi Jeremy,

That sounds great. I could do the 11th/12th.

Shall I pencil this in then for the class plans? We need to contact Shelley to see how busy EMCC is that day - Claire, do you want to do this or shall I?

Claire Gilmour on October 1, 2012:

I will check with Shelley.  Are we going for the 12th December?

Jeremy Morley on October 2, 2012:

11th, particularly from 1-3pm to involve my students. I think the idea was that we could have another face-to-face meeting on the 12th.

Claire Gilmour on October 2, 2012:

I would prefer to have the meeting on the 11th as we have a Council meeting here on the 12th (which I didnt realise)

Steven Feldman on October 2, 2012:

I am out of the country on 10th and 11th could be in Nottingham on 12th, 13th or 14th

Claire Gilmour on October 3, 2012:

What day do we want the meeting?  I will book it in with Shelley.
Also, who will be attending this meeting?

Jeremy Morley on October 3, 2012:

Well if we're doing mapping with the students it's simpler if it's on the 11th because that's when the teaching is timetabled. However we can probably manage if the mapping is on the 12th.

I think I managed to confuse things by conflating the mapping party with another F-2-F meeting. Can we focus first on arranging the mapping party. I'll leave it to Steven to decide whether/when we need another F-2-F.

So, would anyone like to confirm for some form of OSM mapping party in and around EMCC on 12 December?

Claire, is this level of access to EMCC feasible for Shelley & co. on the 12th?
