my suggestion for text

Jo Cook on August 7, 2013:

*Grins* I like, but think we might have to get rid of the "Chinese" bit just in case we offend anyone's sensibilities- though I've come to the conclusion that there's a Conference Law that states "someone will always complain about every single thing you do"...

Steven Feldman on August 7, 2013:

Humour may be very brit but wtf!

Agree with removing Chinese reference just in case.

We could add "These instructions are Clown Copyright"

Mark Iliffe on August 7, 2013:

What about adding a completely opposite clause: "use of this product specifically implies you will not complain about anything from the dates 17/09/13 - 25/09/13 inclusive. Failure to do so will result in tutting."

Steven Feldman on August 7, 2013:

Like that too

Jo Cook on August 14, 2013:

How about these slightly tweaked instructions:

Thank you for purchasing this product. With correct use and careful
maintenance as described in these instructions, your Laptop Lap Rest®
product will give years of trouble-free use.
Laptop Lap Rest® Instructions for use:
1. Place the Laptop Lap Rest® on lap (ensure feet are securely placed on a level floor),
2. Place laptop on top of Laptop Lap Rest®,
3. Commence use of laptop.
Guarantee: this product guarantees your increased enjoyment of the FOSS4G 2013 conference. The guarantee does not cover: accidental damage, misuse or use not in accordance with the instructions in these instructions; consumable items; damage due to incorrect installation, modification or unauthorised service work; the manufacturer disclaims any liability for incidental, or consequential damages.

I'd like to get going with this asap if possible...

Jo

Steven Feldman on August 14, 2013:

Looks fine, maybe change "misuse or use not in accordance with the instructions in these instructions" to "misuse or use not in accordance with these instructions"

I winder whether we could shorten the guarantee bit as it goes on a bit? Maybe remove "consumable items; damage due to incorrect installation, modification or unauthorised service work; the manufacturer disclaims any liability for incidental, or consequential damages"

Jo Cook on August 14, 2013:

Yes. I'd be happy with that.

@Rollo are you in a position to mock this up again this week at all?

Jo Cook on August 19, 2013:

Rollo, can you let me know if you can mock this up this week, or whether I should work from the pdf you uploaded here and see if I can sort it?

Thanks

Jo

Rollo Home on August 19, 2013:

Sorry Jo. Totally missed that initial request on Wednesday. How do you want me to do this? Any particular format etc.?

Jo Cook on August 19, 2013:

Hi Rollo,

No probs :-) pdf is fine, I think we mostly just need the text changing as above.

Ta!

Jo

Rollo Home on August 19, 2013:

OK. Shortly...

Barry Rowlingson on August 19, 2013:

I thought you were being serious about putting instructions on it!

"Clean with a damp kitten". Then put the symbols for Do Not Iron, Do Not Tumble Dry. Do Not Dry Clean.

Rollo Home on August 19, 2013:

Incorporated most of the changes - but if you want to do more please feel free to do so.

Jo Cook on August 19, 2013:

I don't think we should include the statement about not complaining because I think that's a very British sense of humour that some of our delegates might not understand.

I've tried to edit the included docx but libreoffice makes it look a little odd- so basically I think bullet point 1 should say:

Place the Laptop Lap Rest on lap (ensure feet are securely placed on a level floor)

Also Trouble-free needs a hyphen

Thanks

Jo

Rollo Home on August 19, 2013:

changes made. PDF just for visual guidance, txt doc has the text in it.

Jo Cook on August 21, 2013:

I'm happy- anyone else got any comments?

Jo Cook on August 27, 2013:

Right, I've sent this and the front image to the printers. Fingers crossed...

Jo Cook on August 27, 2013:

Proofs are coming through from the printers, see attached. Reverse/back is definitely wrong, as it's portrait when it should be landscape, so I've asked for a new one, but any other comments (today only) would be greatly appreciated.

Jo Cook on August 27, 2013:

OK, slight issue with the back- it looks like the print area shown in pink on the pdf is the maximum area we can have. Consequently I've asked them to remove the outer dotted lines (which don't make sense now IMHO) and check that the "care logo" isn't stretched. Hope everyone's OK with that- or would you prefer we left the dotted lines as in the existing pdf? Let me know today anyhow.

Jo

Rollo Home on August 27, 2013:

Jo, within the confines of the print area, that all sounds sensible. Only comment - can the text be turned 90 degrees? It would then orientate to the direction that you'd have the board for when using as a laptop rest......

Jo Cook on August 27, 2013:

Hi Rollo,

No, it can't, what we end up with is a teeny tiny logo rotated through 90 degrees within the print area as is. I tried :-(

What we have is the best we can get I'm afraid.

**EDIT** I've attached the mockup that they sent with the text rotated. Let me know ASAP which you prefer- I'm out of the office tomorrow and Thursday but  I'm going to phone them to try and confirm the order.
