To unconference or not to unconference

Posted by Steven Feldman on September 6, 2013

Apologies. I had a note to mention this in the team call and of course forgot.

Gary Gale can't come up for the Friday to "organise" the unconference.

I think we have 3 options:
  1. Find someone else to "organise" - could be Peter Batty, Mike Saunt or one of 750+ delegates
  2. Allocate the space and leave the community to self organise or not
  3. Cancel
We have done very little to publicise the unconference so cancelling will probably not matter greatly. If we want to go ahead I probably need to include something in my delegate mail this weekend.

Can we have a virtual show of hands for what we want to do by Monday morning

Jo Cook on September 6, 2013:

I think we can manage without it- there's enough going on. If people *really* complain then they can self-organise if we can keep the space.

Barend Köbben on September 6, 2013:

I'd suggest just mentioning in the delegate email that we have the space
available, so anyone can step up...

Antony Scott on September 6, 2013:

Jo said pretty much what I was thinking.

Peter Batty on September 6, 2013:

I have talked to Steven about it, but I also would vote for canceling. There's already lots going on at that time so I doubt many people would come. And there are birds of a feather sessions allocated for self-organizing topics.

Barry Rowlingson on September 6, 2013:

Cancel, publicise the spare rooms for BoaF and any other extra-curricular activities.

Ian Edwards on September 6, 2013:

I think cancel

Also OGC are pushing for a none breakfast BoF so I could point them at this
space

Rollo Home on September 8, 2013:

While I hate to see another thing drop by the way, I think from a practical point of view without Gary we should let this slide. Giving space to BoF is a good replacement (as there is a  known demand) - and self organising as well.
